Huawei Quietly Launches Android Oreo Beta Program For Mate 9

Just as the company is getting ready to launch Mate 10 next week, it seems that Huawei has quietly launches the Android Oreo 8.0 beta test for Mate 9. Apparently ,this is a limited run test before the company officially releases the update to the global audience.
We have seen screenshots of the new update on the Mate 9, and it looks like a lucky few will be experiencing the new OS update on their units. However, Huawei is limiting the number of beta testers; only 250 people will be chosen.

Furthermore, only Huawei Mate 9 with the MHA-L29C432B194 firmware will be able to participate in this program. If you are one of the lucky few, you will need to download the Beta Friendly User Test from Huawei and cross your fingers that you are chosen.
Since the program will end on 3 November, it is likely that the update will be rolled out just before or by the end date. As the Huawei Mate 10 launch is just around the corner, the official release of the update must not be far.

NVIDIA Unveils Drive PX Pegasus: Made To Power Fully Autonomous Vehicles

Most users know NVIDIA as the company that helped them enjoy their video games via GeForce graphics card. However, the company is also deeply involved in many other emerging field within the computing including artificial intelligence (AI), and autonomous vehicles.
In order to help to push the boundaries within these two segments, the company has unveiled its latest AI computer which is codenamed Pegasus. Its main aim is to power fully autonomous vehicles with SAE J3016 rating of Level 5 which is the highest tier of driving automation as defined by SAE International.

Positioned under its Drive PX paltform, the new system is equipped with two Xavier AI processors alongside two more next-generation (right after Volta) GPUs. It also comes with controller area network, Flexray, and multiple 10Gbit Ethernet connectors.
With memory bandwidth that is more than 1TB per second, the system also features 16 high-speed sensor inputs for camera, radar, lidar, and ultrasonics. Capable of performing 320 trillion operations per second, the Drive PX Pegasus is generally ten times more powerful than Drive PX 2.
NVIDIA Drive PX 2: the predecessor to NVIDIA Drive PX Pegasus.
Since the field has yet to reach maturity, don’t expect to see Drive PX Pegasus-powered vehicles anytime soon. Nevertheless, NVIDIA automotive partners can expect to see the system to be available to them in 2018. We are definitely eager to see how Drive PX Pegasus will affect their work.

Nokia Halts Further Development On OZO VR To Put More Focus On Digital Health

Nokia today has announced that it will be halting the development of its virtual reality camera, OZO and related hardware. According to the official statement released by the company, the current rate of growth within the VR market which is lower than Nokia’s expectation is the main reason behind the halt.
The decision will apparently affect up to 310 staff in Nokia Technologies which itself has around 1,090 staff with most of them located in Finland, United States, and United Kingdom. Despite the halt, Nokia will continue to honor its commitments with existing customers.

At the same time, the Finnish company will increase its effort in the digital health space. Nokia is planning to do this by taking full advantage of Nokia Health which was formerly known as Withings when it was acquired by Nokia in 2016.
Originally introduced in 2015, the OZO ecosystem which revolves around OZO+ spherical stereoscopic 360 camera as its core is designed for content creators that want to dabble in VR and mixed reality. Despite the claim by Nokia, VR is still being touted as a popular trend within the industry which is why it is rather unfortunate to see OZO being shelved away.

Report: Apple to Bring Face ID to Next Generation iPad Pro

It looks like Apple might be bringing its Face ID facial recognition system to more devices. According to reliable analyst, Ming Chi-Kuo of KGI Securities, Apple will be bringing its TrueDepth camera system to the next generation iPad Pro, enabling Face ID on the device.
Unfortunately, Ming Chi-Kuo does not have the full detail yet. The analyst only expects Apple to bring the TrueDepth camera to the flagship 12.9” and 10.5” iPad Pro models as opposed to the cheaper iPad units.

Kuo also did not specify how Apple would implement the new camera system and biometric technology into the iPad Pro. Apple could retain the same design, leaving the Home button and Touch ID in tact, or it could bring the new iPhone X design to the iPad Pro. Hopefully it’s the latter, especially if Apple wish to bring a consistent user experience between the iPad and iPhone. Bringing its TrueDepth camera to the iPad could also increase adoption of the technology.
“We predict iOS devices to be equipped with TrueDepth Camera in 2018F will include iPhone X and 2018 new iPhone and iPad models. Because of this, we believe more developers will pay attention to TrueDepth Camera/ facial recognition related applications. We expect Apple’s (US) major promotion of facial recognition related applications will encourage the Android camp to also dedicate more resources to developing hardware and facial recognition applications.”
But of course, nothing is final for now. The iPhone X, the first and only device with Face ID at the moment, is not even out yet, and it makes sense for Apple to gauge the user experience with Face ID before it make any future plans. Preorders for the iPhone X in selected countries will begin on 27 October, and will go on sale starting from 3 November 2017. However, according to reports, availability will be limited as Apple is facing production problems for the facial recognition sensor.

Yet another 18:9 aspect ratio smartphone incoming. According to its TENAA listing, the upcoming honor 7X will feature the now ubiquitous screen aspect ratio and a mid-range specs list that should be sufficient for majority of users.
The honor 7X is said to be near release, and now that the device is registered with TENAA, China’s certification agency, it’s a promising sign. Featuring the now popular 18:9 screen, the 7X also comes with mid-tier specification. This does – and should – translate to affordable entry prices.
According to the TENAA listing, the honor 7X has the following hardware:

5.93 inch 2160 x 1080 pixel 18:9 screen
Kirin 659 processor
64GB storage

8MP camera (front)

If these hardware are legitimate, the honor 7X is shaping up to be an interesting smartphone. According to rumours, the device will go for $270 (about RM 1,140) when it is launched in China. At that price point, the honor 7X will be one of the more affordable Full HD 18:9 smartphones in the market.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 May Come with 18:9 Screen And Dual Cameras

Looks like the 18:9 (or 2:1 if you can do division) screen is becoming a thing now. Xiaomi is the next to jump on the bandwagon with the upcoming Xiaomi Redmi Note 5. Leaked photos show the upcoming Redmi phablet with a large screen and dual-cameras on the back.
Not surprisingly, the design of the Redmi Note 5 looks similar to previous Redmi Note models. What is different here is the extra camera sensor on the rear and the impressive 18:9 screen. So much so, in fact, that the front has an almost-obscene screen-to-body ratio, which will be great for content consumption.

It is speculated that the phone will have either the Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 or the MediaTek Helio P25 inside. We may see 4GB of RAM, and 32GB of storage. A large battery may also be present, following previous Xiaomi Redmi Note models – with a possible 4000mAh cell inside.
No launch or release dates has been leaked, so we will have to wait for news from Xiaomi itself on the official availability of its first Redmi device with an 18:9 screen. Also, as is always the case with leaked information, take everything here with a grain of salt.

GTX 1070 Ti Listed On MSI Afterburner 4.4.0 Beta 19

It looks like we’re pretty much set for the imminent launch of Nvidia’s GTX 1070 Ti graphics card. New information has come to light regarding this heavily rumoured graphics card, but this time, it’s listed on an overclocking tool: MSI Afterburner 4.4.0 Beta 19. Prior to this, rumours have surfaced regarding the possible launch date for the GTX 1070 Ti (read more about it here).
The MSI Afterburner 4.4.0 Beta 19 GPU tweaking tool comes with the following excerpt in its changelog: added core voltage control for reference design Nvidia GeForce GTX 1070 Ti series graphics cards. The addition of support for this graphics card on a well known overclocking tool is a pretty big indication that the GTX 1070 Ti really does exist.

Based on previous rumours, it’s said that the Nvidia GTX 1070 Ti graphics card will likely be equipped with the Pascal GP104 GPU – similar to that found on the original GTX 1070 card. Of course, the GTX 1070 Ti will feature higher performance output and efficiency rate. That said, it wouldn’t be too surprising to see this graphics card being equipped with the “normal” GDDR5 memory controller instead of GDDR5X.
That aside, another new feature that comes with MSI Afterburner 4.4.0 Beta 19 is the addition of low-level access for AMD’s Vega graphics cards. This new feature allows for Afterburner users to have much deeper controls over their Vega graphics cards like voltage control. Regardless, if you’re in the market for a new high-end graphics card and you favour Nvidia cards more than AMD’s, then it’s best to start saving for the GTX 1070 Ti now.
