MSI Adds Optix MAG272QR To Gaming Monitor Lineup; Comes with 165Hz Refresh Rate and 1ms Response time

MSI recently expanded its arsenal of gaming monitors with the Optix MAG272QR. Of course, like all gaming monitors, this one comes loaded with a variety of features designed to improve a gamer’s overall experience.


To start off, the monitor sports a 27-inch VA panel, and has a maximum resolution of 1440p (2560 x 1440). Additionally, it also has a variable refresh rate of up to 165Hz, along with a response time of 1ms (grey-to-grey). To be fair, it’s not clear if that is the native refresh rate or if it is an overclocked number from a considerably lower refresh rate. What remains certain, however, is that you’re definitely going to need a DisplayPort cable to be able to run the display at such high refresh rates.

There are some setbacks to Optix MAG272QR. Firstly, it only has a maximum brightness of 300 nits; that’s 100 nits lower than the standard 400n nits needed for VESA’s DisplayHDR400 certification. On that note, it should be pointed out that the display isn’t HDR certified, but to be frank, that isn’t such a huge issue. Not unless you’re a stickler for perfect colour representation. Oh, and lest we forget, the monitor also come with AMD’s FreeSync and RGB built-in the back of the monitor.

Ports-wise, the Optix MAG272QR features two USB-A 2.0 port, one USB-B 2.0, a USB-C port, one DisplayPort 1.2, two HDMI 2.0b ports, and a 3.5mm headphone out port.

For those of you interested in owning the Optix MAG272QR, we’re sorry to say that it isn’t heading to Malaysia. We contacted MSI Malaysia regarding the matter, to which the company gave us the bad news. Instead, the brand told that it will be bringing in the Optix MAG272 variant next month, but didn’t specify an exact date. Also, do note that this variant only has a maximum resolution of Full HD and it doesn’t come with the built-in RGB at the back of the display.
