Samsung Files Patent For AR Glasses

It’s been awhile since we heard of Samsung’s efforts in the VR space. The last we heard of it was when the company’s president DJ Koh mentioned a prototype device last year that mixes both VR and AR. Now, it looks like the company has been granted a patent for a pair of AR glasses.

The patent was filed to the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The described AR glasses also looks a lot like an ordinary pair of glasses, complete with folding temples. This is quite unlike, say, Microsoft’s HoloLens 2, which looks like it clearly belongs in a factory.

The folding mechanism also utilises magnetic sensors that also acts as a switch, according to the patent. When unfolded, a projector integrated into the temple will beam images on the small display located where the glass is. The patent also describes a section on the glass where the projections will be beamed to.

Ultimately, a patent doesn’t mean much in the way of indicating if it will be an actual product. But if it does, Samsung’s AR glasses looks like it will be something for the general masses. Fingers crossed it doesn’t become another industrial use AR glasses.
