Synology Announces New DiskStation DS1618+; Supports Dual M.2 SSDs

Synology recently announced the DiskStation DS1618+, a new 6-bay NAS that it says is designed for “tech enthusiasts and SMEs.” What makes the NAS stand out is the installation of a M2D17 PCIe adapter card. It allows users to install a dual M.2 SSD setup on the NAS, enabling it to handle high-IOPS system caching while reducing IO latency.

Alternatively, the same adapter card can also be used to install a network interface card, which in turn will be able to support two 10GbE ports. Once installed, these ports are capable of reaching a maximum sequential read and write speed of 1,551Mbps and 586Mbps, respectively.

In terms of hardware, the DS1618+ is powered by a quad-core Intel Atom C3538 CPU and 4GB DDR4 non-ECC SODIMM (expandable by up to 32GB) RAM. Its maximum storage capacity is 72TB when all six bays are populated, but it supports a maximum single volume size of 108TB. As with all Synology DiskStations, the DS1618+ is powered by the company’s DiskStation Manager (DSM) OS.

The Synology DS1618+ is expected to be available in early June. It will retail for RM3,499, and will come with 5-year hardware warranty coverage.
